The Ambassador of the Republic of Haiti, Dr. Weibert Arthus, arrives in Canada with a very rich professional background that has led him to hold several previous positions as a journalist, historian and diplomat.
Ambassador Arthus was most recently Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs. From November 2016 to March 2020, he was Minister Counselor in charge of political issues and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti in the United States. He also headed the consular service ai from November 2018 to August 2019. He was in charge of the economic section of the embassy from November 2016 to July 2017. He was stationed in Argentina, from February 2014 to October 2016, where he served as Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Ambassador Arthus served as a member of the Ministerial Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs from July 2013 to February 2014. In addition, from 1995 to 2013, he worked as a journalist in Haiti and France. He began his career as a journalist at Radio Caraïbes FM in 1995. He also worked as a journalist at Radio France Internationale (RFI) between 2002 and 2007. He was appointed Director at Radio Télévision Caraïbes in 2011.
Ambassador Arthus holds a PhD in the history of international relations from the University of Paris I-Panthéon Sorbonne. Eager to pass on his knowledge and passion for history to future generations, he has also served as an associate professor of history at the State University of Haiti, as well as at the Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies of Haiti. He is also the author of several works, including The Great Dates in Haiti's Diplomatic History. From the Founding Period to the Present Day (2017); Duvalier in the Shadow of the Cold War. The Underside of Haiti's Foreign Policy 1957-1963 (2014); and The French Diplomatic Machine in Haiti (2012); as well as numerous articles published in renowned scientific journals including Histoire, mondes et cultures religieuses and Diplomatic History.
Ambassador Arthus has had the opportunity in the past to present his research work at Concordia University in Canada. He is also the recipient of several distinctions obtained as part of his academic career, including the Moody Research Grant (2014); the Barbancourt Scholarship (2013), for the publication project of the book Duvalier in the Shadow of the Cold War; and the Arthur Schlesinger Fellowship (2012), for a research project on relations between the United States and the Caribbean during the Kennedy years.
Ambassador Arthus is also a member of the Haitian Studies Association, the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) and the American Historical Association (AHA).
